3 trapped miners found alive

THREE men, who had been trapped in a flooded mine in Guizhou Province for 25 days, were rescued yesterday.

The miners were found at 11:28am in a flooded shaft of a coal mine and immediately lifted to the ground, according to Chen Qing, head of the rescue headquarters.

They survived by licking water off the walls of the coal mine, China Central Television said yesterday.

The buried miners saw a rescuer's flashlight and shouted, enabling searchers to follow the sound to the pit where they lay, CCTV said.

They appeared very weak but can talk, rescuers said.

The three Henan Province natives - Wang Quanjie, Zhao Weixing, both 36, and Wang Kuangwei, 35 - were in a stable condition when they left the mine, CCTV said. Only one was able to walk.

The Xinqiao Coal Mine in Qinglong County was flooded on June 17 when 16 miners were working underground. Rescuers are still searching for 12 others.
