Auditors concerned at dam project

CHINA'S national auditors are concerned that developers of a dam on the upper reaches of the Yangtze River are taking shortcuts that may endanger the project and send costs spiraling.

The construction timeline for the Xiluodu dam has been shortened by 27 months, "which increases the risk and difficulty for the construction, and raises the cost for the project," the National Audit Office said on its Website.

The auditors also said the project's managers were not keeping costs under control and that developers had collected nearly 10 million yuan (US$1.5 million) in unauthorized fees.

The 67.5-billion-yuan dam would be the world's third largest hydropower project.

The dam is due to be finished in 2013. Last month, it was announced that the height would be increased to accommodate design changes.
