Commander sacked after wife slaps tour guide

A vice regimental commander and his wife have been fired after his wife was revealed to have slapped a tour guide who stopped her from touching a 1,000-year-old fresco during her visit to Mogao Grottoes in northwest China's Gansu Province.

Chen Wei was sacked by the Party committee of Regiment No.104 of Agriculture Division No.12 of Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps. His wife Yu Fuqin also lost her post as Party secretary of the regiment's hospital, www.rednet.cn reported today, citing an official statement on the online forum Tianya.cn.

The couple was penalized because "the slapping incident left seriously negative social effects," according to the statement. The couple's use of official vehicles for the personal tour also breached rules, the statement added.

The couple was identified through an Internet so-called "flesh search engine" after a previous post revealing the slapping sparked strong public anger.
