Congress Told Of Museum Shortcomings

NEARLY 90 percent of museum employees in China have not been to university, the congress of the International Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences heard yesterday.

In the United States and Europe, most museum managers had PhDs but there were fewer than 20 PhDs among China's museum heads.

Pan Shouyong, deputy head of the anthropology institute of the Central University for Nationalities said high standards of conservation, management and research were needed.

"Many registered collections are missing and some are not even registered because of poor management systems," he said.
