Corrupt boss won't appeal 11-year term

THE "super-expensive cigarette director" who has been sentenced to 11 years in jail for taking bribes said he will not appeal and is writing a book about the "corridors of power."

Zhou Jiugeng, former real estate management bureau director in Nanjing's Jiangning District, said through his lawyer Jin Hui that he could accept the 11-year jail sentence. Zhou's family also decided not to appeal, reported Yangtse Evening Post today.

Zhou was sacked last year after photos were posted on the Internet showing him wearing a Vacheron Constantin watch costing at least 100,000 yuan (US$14,656) and smoking Nanjing 95 Imperial cigarettes, costing 150 yuan a pack.

On Saturday he was convicted of accepting 1.07 million yuan and HK$ 110,000 in bribes.

Jin said Zhou told him he felt good after eight months in a detention center without alcohol and a social life. Zhou has already finished 35,000 words of a novel about politics based on his experience, he said.

The only thing Zhou missed behind bars is cigarettes, Jin said. Zhou will be transferred to prison and start serving his 11-year term next month.
