Culture doors to open

Officials from China's mainland yesterday pledged to further open cultural and educational sectors to Taiwan as part of its drive to facilitate cross-Strait exchanges.

Culture Minister Cai Wu, attending the fifth Cross-Strait Economic, Trade and Culture Forum in Changsha in Hunan Province, said authorities were making policies to encourage and benefit the development of Taiwan's entertainment business on the mainland.

Its entertainment industry people would be allowed to run performance venues through jointly investing or cooperating with mainland enterprises and could fund such venues on their own, said Cai.

Entertainment industry brokerage companies would also be allowed to set up on the Chinese mainland, he said.

Tian Jin, deputy director of the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, said policies were being developed to allow Taiwan companies and individuals to cooperate with mainland businessaes in movie making and distribution.

Other plans also include cross-Strait publishing cooperation.

Yuan Guiren, vice minister of education, said Taiwan students with top-notch results in college entrance exams could also apply to the mainland universities.
