Dead worker's families get silicosis compensation

THE families of 12 migrant workers from southwest Yunnan Province who died of silicosis after working in quartz plants in eastern Anhui Province have received compensation of 90,000 yuan (US$13,158) each, the People's Daily reported today.

Sixty-eight other workers who suffered from the illness will get compensation packages ranging from 30,000 yuan to 60,000 yuan, depending on the seriousness of the disease.

Only one worker surnamed Deng is till receiving treatment in a hospital in Shuifu County of Yunnan. Governments in Shuifu County, Zhaotong City and Yunnan Province are paying for the medical bills.

The governments have so far provided 1.7 million yuan for the afflicted workers.

Fengyang County government in Anhui Province paid a lump sum of 4.5 million yuan for the migrant workers earlier this month after Shuifu County sent three teams to negotiate.

Huang Gaolian, one of the stricken workers, is still unable to work. Her husband is also ill and they borrowed more than 30,000 to repair their house damaged in last year's devastating earthquake in May.

They hope to get compensation from the quartz plant owners, but they have no contract to prove their working relationship, Li Tao, a lawyer from Yunnan Yuntai Law Firm said.

The quartz plants in Fengyang have been closed and it is difficult to find the owners, the report said.
