Fake notes gang held in raids

POLICE in central Hunan Province and the southern Guangdong Province have seized 11 people suspected of forging huge amounts of money, the police authority in Hunan said yesterday.

After more than two months' investigation, policemen seized the suspects on Wednesday morning in Hunan's Chenzhou City and Guangzhou City and Shanwei City in Guangdong Province, according to the Public Security Bureau of Chenzhou.

Police also seized ink used for printing the notes, a number of pieces of printing equipment, and forged notes with a face value of 90 million yuan (US$13.2 million) at the sites.

The State Council launched a nationwide crackdown on counterfeiting in January.

Between 2006 and 2008, Chinese courts dealt with 3,228 forgery cases and sentenced 4,524 people.

Among them, 838, or 18.5 percent, were handed down prison terms of more than three years or, in the most serious cases, the death penalty.
