Graft officials punished

CHINA had reported 135 officials who violated Party discipline in the country's economic stimulus projects by August 15, the Party disciplinary watchdog said in Beijing yesterday.

Among them, six broke the law and were handed over to prosecutors, said a statement issued by the Communist Party of China Central Commission for Discipline Inspection.

The others received administrative or disciplinary punishment, it said.

As one of the most serious cases, the statement listed Lan Shaowei, deputy head of Hanyuan County in southwestern Sichuan Province, who was found taking 585,000 yuan (US$85,700) from bidders of a reservoir project. He was expelled from the CPC and sentenced to 12 years in prison.

The CCDI expected officials to learn the lessons from these cases, the statement said.

The CCDI pledged to supervise projects involving huge government investment. "We will seriously punish those who do not effectively implement the central government's policy and those who break discipline," it said.

Last year, China announced economic stimulus measures with a government investment of 4 trillion yuan.
