Hangzhou fights noise pollution

SHOPS will be banned from using speakers to attract shoppers in Hangzhou, capital of neighboring Zhejiang Province, after local lawmakers passed new regulations to fight noise pollution.

Those found using speakers at public venues such as stores, parks, wet markets, stadiums, restaurants and squares, will be fined from 200 yuan (US$29) to 500 yuan, today's Oriental Morning Post reported.

The noise from businesses' equipment such as cooling systems, power generators and water pumps must also be below the national standard, the regulations say.

Noisy renovation projects will be banned at lunch from noon to 2pm and overnight from 8pm to 8am.
