Lawmaker fakes birthday parties to collect bribes

A LAWMSKER in central China's Henan Province has faked birthdays of his family members to boost his chances of collecting bribes.

Wu Jinming, former dean of the Xingyang City Committee of the Chinese People's Congress - the country's lawmaker - has been sentenced to 14 years for taking 2.63 million yuan (US$385,250) in bribes, today's Wuhan Evening News reported.

Wu, 57, also had another 2.6 million yuan he couldn't explain how he received.

The Erqi District People's Court of Zhengzhou, Henan's capital city, has confiscated the money and some of Wu's properties.

Wu was caught after the Zhengzhou principal disciplinary authority received public reports in June 2008 of his bribe taking.

Investigators found Wu took 860,000 yuan and an apartment worth 883,000 yuan from companies to arrange deals from 2005 to 2007.

To boost his graft, he said his father's and mother-in-law's birthday were on January 1 and hosted parties on the day from 1995 to collect "gift money" from those under his administration.
