Mainlanders in 'best job' top 50

TWO applicants from the Chinese mainland and one from Taiwan are among the top 50 competing for a "caretaker" position on Australia's Great Barrier Reef that Netizens are calling "the best job in the world."

The finalists, who hail from 22 countries and regions, were selected from among 34,684 applicants, Tourism Queensland, which sponsored the contest to promote travel to the area, said yesterday.

Yao Yi, a 30-year-old single male from Nanjing, capital city of Jiangsu Province, works in management for a joint venture in Guangdong's provincial capital of Guangzhou City. He told Shanghai Daily yesterday he's well qualified for the job and that it matches his interests.

"I'm experienced in diving and surfing, and I think I'm a good underwater photographer," he said.

People who applied for the job were required to upload a one-minute video on the event's Website, www.islandreefjob.com. Yao said in the video that if he wins the job, a large number of Chinese tourists would be attracted to the Great Barrier Reef and help develop tourism there.

"I have the experience of working overseas, and I know how to deal with people from different cultural backgrounds, which is another advantage for the job," he said in the interview.

The other Chinese mainland applicant, Yu Ying, a media supervisor and documentary film maker, was not available for comment yesterday.

The top 50 will be narrowed down to a final 11, 10 of whom will be chosen by Tourism Queensland along with a wild-card applicant picked by popular vote.

They will fly to Hamilton Island in early May to take part in the final selection process, which will end with the announcement of the successful candidate on May 6.

The winner will begin a six-month assignment on July 1. The job duties include living in a luxury oceanfront villa on Hamilton Island and exploring everything the reef's islands have to offer.

The winner even gets a salary of A$150,000 (US$96,302).
