Mars rover ready to be launched

THE China-made "YH-1" Mars rover - the country's first attempt to explore the red planet as part of a joint mission with Russia - will be launched in October.
The rover has passed all examinations by experts and is ready for launch, yesterday's Beijing Evening News reported.

The Shanghai Aerospace Bureau confirmed that the YH-1 rover has been transferred to Russia and is being tested.

YH-1 is expected to land on Mars next year and explore the planet, search for signs of water, and examine its evolution.

A Russian rocket will carry YH-1 and a Russian exploration vehicle Phobos-Grunt.

The two vehicles will separate when they reach the orbit of Mars next August. The Chinese rover will explore Mars while the Russian craft will explore Martian moon Phobos.
