Officials apologize on TV over wedding banquets

TWO government officials in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality made public apologies on local television on Wednesday for arranging massive wedding banquets for their daughters, today's Chongqing Economic Times reported.

The two officials, identified as Bi and Zhang, are officials in Chongqing's Yunyang County. Both showed regret during their apologies.

Bi, vice dean of county's poverty aid office, has received a demerit by the Party for inviting 460 guests to a banquets for his daughter's wedding on June 20. He took gift money from people who are under his administration.

Zhang, vice governor of the county's Nanxi Town, was also punished. He had invited 578 guests to 60 tables at two banquets he held for his daughter's wedding on May 31. He also took money from people who are under his administration.

Yunyang's disciplinary supervising authority said both officials had breached the anti-corruption disciplines and created a negative social impact.

The authority issued a decree in April forbidding officials from holding massive banquets for events such as weddings, birthdays or funerals to prevent corruptions.

The Chongqing Economic Times cited figures that indicated 44 officials in Chongqing had been punished for arranging banquets from November 2004 to June 2006.
