Party charts future challenge

THE Central Committee of the Communist Party of China began a plenary session yesterday in Beijing to discuss ways to build the country's ruling party.

A draft decision by the committee on major issues concerning "strengthening and improving Party building in a new situation" will be discussed at the four-day meeting.

Once adopted, the decision would become a key document to guide the Party's future.

Before the session, the Party's central authority solicited advice from inside and outside the Party to draft the decision, which embodies opinions and suggestions from various areas, departments and deputies to the 17th CPC National Congress.

The session will also hear the work report of the Political Bureau of the Party Central Committee.

The meeting is widely seen as a significant event half a month before the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China under the leadership of the Party.

The meeting will review the experience of Party building since the Party came into power in October 1949 and will provide a thorough analysis of today's challenges.

Members of the Central Committee will also discuss ways to advance the cause of Party building with a spirit of reform and creativity.

Doing so will help promote the practice of the "scientific outlook on development," an important concept endorsed by the Party that emphasizes caring about the well-being of people and promoting comprehensive, coordinated and sustainable development.

The meeting is also of great significance as China has been working hard to grapple with global economic downtown to maintain a steady economic growth.
