Planning starts for Sino-Singaporean green town

THE National Development and Reform Commission has approved the first phase of a Sino-Singaporean ecological town in Tianjin Municipality with an expected budget of 12 billion yuan (US$1.75 billion) recently, Xinhua news agency reported today.

Upon completion, the 4-square-kilometer area in Binhai New Area will be home to 26,000 people.

Premier Wen Jiabao and Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong signed the agreement for the town, which will be built 45 kilometers from downtown Tianjin and 150 kilometers southeast of Beijing.

The town will be built on alkaline soil and will have a desalination plant and sewage-treatment system similar to those working in Singapore.

The 30-square-kilometer town is expected to cost 50 billion yuan.

It will take three to five years time to finish the first phase, and the whole project is expected to take 10 to 15 years.
