Police face trial after fatal brawl

TWO police officers and a jobless man involved in a fatal street brawl will go on trial on Tuesday in northeastern China's Harbin City.

Prosecutors are to charge them with injuring with intent after a 22-year-old man died in the brawl, Chongqing Morning Post reported today.

Qi Xin, deputy chief of the Harbin Railway Public Security Bureau's criminal investigation brigade and Liu Linan, an officer with the bureau's headquarters, allegedly beat Lin Songlin to death. Yang Sen, a friend of Lin, is charged with injuring two other police officers, Li Xinyu and Wang Jingang, in the brawl.

The trial will be held in the No. 1 Large Courtroom at Harbin Intermediate People's Court. Members of Heilongjiang Province People's Congress, the Political Consultative Conference and government officials are expected to attend the trial.

Lin's father said the only thing his family wanted was to see his son's killers be executed and that the family be compensated with 500,000 yuan (US$73,099).

Prosecutors said the two officers were in a group of six local police who fought with Lin Songling and his friends in front of a nightclub on October 11 in Harbin.

Lin allegedly chided one of the police officers for speeding, sparking the brawl. Lin was later found dead at the scene and several of those involved in the brawl were injured.

The six police, aged between 28 and 31, drove to the bar after a private get-together and were not wearing uniforms.

Yang, 22, and unemployed, is alleged to have fractured Li's left eye socket and broken four of Wang's ribs.

Police officers Li Feng, Wang Jingang, Luan Ao and Li Xinyu have been given bail as investigators said a 36-minute surveillance video of the fight did not prove they had contributed to Lin's death.
