Police officer sentenced to death after shooting

A POLICEMAN in Yunnan Province has been sentenced to death for shooting a civilian to death during an argument.

The Intermediate People's Court of Hani-Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Honghe in Mengzi County also ordered Ji Zhongchun, 42, to pay 100,000 yuan (US$14,600) to the victim's wife.

The court heard that Ji, who served in the Mengzi County Public Security Bureau, was off duty and had been drinking before the shooting on February 13, China News Service reported.

He drove his private car to a residential quarter on Tianzhu Road and was reversing when he got into an argument with Pan Jun, 40, an employee of a local electric power company, who claimed Ji's car had scratched his vehicle.

Pan hit Ji, who pulled out his gun and shot Pan three times. Witnesses called police and Ji was detained at the scene.

Ji claimed he acted in self-defense. Ji stayed at the scene and handed his gun to police but the court did not consider this was a sufficient reason to consider a lighter sentence as he hadn't taken the initiative to surrender to police.

Ji's attorney argued that because Ji had stayed at the scene it should be thought of as a surrender.

Ji said he would appeal as his conduct hadn't been taken into account.

Pan's wife, Xu Xinyue, and his family said they were satisfied with the sentence.
