Premier wants to visit Taiwan

PREMIER Wen Jiabao expressed his strong will to go to Taiwan at his press conference in Beijing.

"Although I am 67 years old, if it is possible, I would like to go to Taiwan," he said. "Even if I can no longer walk at old age, I will crawl to Taiwan."

"I have long cherished the hope of going to the treasure island," he said. "I really want to go to Alishan Mountain, Sun Moon Lake and many other places, and to have contact with the people in Taiwan."

Wen urged closer ties and further cooperation across the Taiwan Strait to tackle the financial crisis together.

He proposed to sign an economic cooperative agreement between the mainland and Taiwan as soon as possible and set up a framework for cooperation across the Strait to realize mutual benefits.

Trade volume across the Strait reached nearly US$130 billion last year, Wen told reporters.

Taiwan enjoyed a surplus of US$77.8 billion last year and invested US$47 billion in the mainland as well as opening more than 30,000 plants, he added.

Eight Taiwan tourism stocks surged to their daily caps after Wen's words, according to China News Service.
