Quake-affected total reduced

Authorities in southwest China's Yunnan Province reported yesterday that 250,000 people had been displaced by Thursday's 6.0-magnitude earthquake, not 400,000 as initially reported.

The miscalculation was due in part to chaos in the quake's aftermath which left one dead and more than 300 people injured, said Cao Jianfang, deputy governor of Yunnan.

Wang Shufen, chief of Yunnan Provincial Department of Civil Affairs, said the displaced people came from Lijiang City, Chuxiong Ethnic Yi Autonomous Prefecture and Dali Ethnic Bai Autonomous Prefecture. About 110,000 were from Yao'an County, the worst-affected area.

A total of 3,018 tents were erected to accommodate 21,802 displaced people as of Friday night, said Liang Yu, chief of Yao'an County's bureau of Civil Affairs, adding that the rest had sought shelter with relatives.

The quake hit at 7:19pm on Thursday at a depth of about 10 kilometers.
