Radiactive material found in recycling plant

A METAL container holding radioactive material has been found just 12 hours after it was reported missing from a factory in southwestern China's Sichuan Province, today's West China City Daily reported.

The container has been moved to a special storage area for radioactive material after radiation experts confirmed it was safe. No radiation had leaked from the container while it was missing, nor environmental pollution was caused, the Chengdu-based newspaper said.

The container was reported missing on the night of October 7 when it was supposed to installed in the Titanium Industry Unit of Pangang Group in Panzhihua City, the newspaper said.

The local environmental protection bureau and police launched a joint emergency search and found it in a local recycling station the next morning.

Police have caught suspects they think stole the radiator and sold it to the station after mistakenly taking it for iron bulk, which could have reaped considerable money as its weighs tens of kilograms.
