Rare chance for naval gazing

QINGDAO residents today have a rare chance to visit some of the warships attending the celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy, The Beijing News reported today.

The Qingdao Port administrator opened the first, second and seventh dock at the Dagang Harbor for people to have a close up look at the warships this morning and a lucky 1,500 will be allowed on board the Chinese guided missile frigate Mianyang, and two New Zealand Navy ships, HMNZS Te Mana and HMNZS Endeavour.

The four-day celebrations feature seminars, a boat race and a fleet review tomorrow that will include the first public appearance of China's nuclear submarines.

Twenty-one foreign naval vessels from 14 countries, including the United States and Russia, and delegations from 29 countries will take part.

The PLA Navy was founded on April 23, 1949.
