THE death toll of a coal mine explosion in central China's Henan Province has risen to 54, with 25 miners still trapped underground by 8am today.

The rescue work is continuing, China News Service reported.

The compensation to the dead workers will be no less than 200,000 yuan (US$29,412) each, the Henan Province government said.

A total of 93 people were working in the pit when the accident occurred, of whom 14 managed to escape.
