Shenzhen may ban electric bikes

AUTHORITIES in southern China's Shenzhen plan to ban electric bicycles from the streets to improve road safety and traffic.

The proposal, which could be carried out next year if it wins approval, is awaiting review by the provincial government, Guangzhou-based Southern Metropolis Daily reported today.

Electric bikes flourished in Shenzhen after the city banned motorbikes in 2003.

No one knows how many electric bikes are on the streets of Shenzhen since there is no need to register the vehicles.

Traffic officers have complained that some owners have modified their bikes to lift their speed up to 80 kilometers an hour, and at least seven people have died and 65 injured in electric bicycle accidents since the beginning of the year.

However, the proposal is expected to face fierce objections from bike manufacturers and unlicensed electric bike taxis.
