Spices caused mass food poisoning

FOOD poisoning that left 186 ill in Gansu Province has been traced to tainted spices in a snack food, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in Lanzhou, the provincial capital, said yesterday.

The food poisoning, which was reported on April 29 in three villages in Yuzhong County, was caused by D-group salmonella, an intestinal bacteria, according to the center's report.

Fifty-five of the 186 people affected were hospitalized, but all have been discharged.

Health authorities in Yuzhong County said the villagers became ill after eating niangpi, a local snack.

Police have arrested the vendor, surnamed Tie.
