THE world's tallest television tower is being constructed in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province.

The new television tower is expected to open next year and will be the most popular scenic spot in the city, a portal Website of Guangzhou-based Yangcheng Evening News Group reported today.

Currently a 160-meter-high aerial mast is being installed on the top of the tower.

The tower is 450 meters tall. It is located south of Zhujiang New Town, a planned central business district of Guangzhou.

The construction has cost 2.2 billion yuan(US$324 million) and workers have spent 26 months on the 450-meter tower. A total of 55,000 tons of steel was used on the tower, 13,000 tons more than used for the construction of the National Stadium, or the Bird' Nest.

Two 500-ton water tanks are fitted near the top of the tower in order to reduce swaying. However the 40 to 80 centimeters swing is safe, the project chief of the tower said.

There are tracks under the water tanks to let them move when the tower sways to help maintain the stability.
The water tanks could also be helpful if there is a fire.

The tower is strong enough to resist a magnitude-8 earthquake and typhoons that might occur once every 100 years.

High speed elevators will carry visitors to the top floor in 90 seconds.

It is estimated the tower will attract more than 10,000 visitors a day.
