Two cops to go on trial for deadly street fight

TWO former police officers and an unemployed man involved in a fatal street brawl in Harbin, capital of Heilongjiang Province, will go on trial on Tuesday.

All three face charges of assault and battery for their roles in the street fight, which led to the death of a 22-year-old man, Liaoning Satellite TV reported yesterday.

Two officers, Qi Xin and Liu Li'nan are accused of beating Lin Songling to death in front of a nightclub on October 11, while Yang Sen, a friend of Lin, allegedly attacked other off-duty police officers in the chaos, severely injuring two of them.

The Harbin Intermediate People's Court is expected to hear the case.

Lin's father said his only desire was to see the two officers paid with their lives for his son's death. He would rather give up any demand of compensation for the purpose, he added.

Hu Fengbin, an attorney acting on behalf of Lin's family, said the two officers might face the death penalty.

Lin's family was reported to have demanded 500,000 yuan (US$73,099) in compensation.

Prosecutors said Qi and Liu were in a group of six local police officers who fought with Lin and his friends. Officers started to fight back only after Lin repeatedly hit them, investigators said.

Lin and his friends had argued with an officer in front of the Candy Bar for his reckless driving. The quarrel developed into a brawl that not only left Lin dead but also resulted in serious injuries to several others on both sides.

The six off-duty officers, aged between 28 and 31, drove to the bar after a private gathering and were not in police uniform.
