Violent rampage through amusement park

A GANG of 50 armed men went on a violent rampage through an amusement park in Guangdong Province early yesterday, injuring security guards and destroying equipment.

The men drove up to the Guangzhou Grand World Scenic Park in the capital of the southern China province, got out of six vehicles and began shooting at security guards and smashing windows, the Guangzhou Daily reported today.

Brandishing fishing spears, swords and iron bars and speaking in Mandarin and the Chaoshan dialect, some of the gang also carried firearms, said Wu Wenqiang, the head of security.

The gang seemed to be well organized and quickly split into five groups targeting security offices around the park, according to the chairman of the park surnamed He.

He said the first group attacked the power supply room and the security booth beside it. A guard surnamed Cao looked out from a power supply room but was immediately shot in the collarbone.

The thugs then punched and kicked another two guards, destroyed the equipment inside the power supply room and fired their guns. The other men attacked two entrances, security guard dormitories and a plaza in the park.

The attack lasted more than an hour, according to He. The injured guards were taken to hospital with five remaining in hospital for treatment.

He said the attack could be connected with a dispute over a restaurant's water and electricity bills worth more than 1 million yuan (US$14,620). The Grand World Scenic Park Corp had leased land to an investment company to open a restaurant. The restaurant changed hands several times and the bills were unpaid. So He's company cut the water and electricity supplies to the restaurant in January. He said his company had filed a lawsuit to settle the dispute.

Police later found a fishing spear, a sword and several iron bars under a vehicle at the site.
