Young Chinese check out porn

NEARLY half of Chinese people aged below 25 visit pornographic Websites, which exposes them to online crimes, an expert on youth studies said in Beijing yesterday.

Sun Hongyan, from the China Youth and Children Research Association, said the figure was based on a year-long survey.

The survey polled 24,000 Internet users aged below 25 in five cities including Beijing and Shanghai.

It found 48.3 percent had visited porn sites and 43.4 percent had received e-mail or e-cards with violent or obscene content. Some 14.5 percent had lost assets or experienced physical or emotional injuries.

"The Internet is a double-edged sword for youth," Sun said. "It can broaden their horizons but also leave them vulnerable to online crimes."

Shang Xiuyun, a judge from the Haidian District Court of Beijing, said the negative influence of online porn or violence had led to a rise in juvenile crimes, including robbery and rape.

The government said last week that all computers produced or sold in China after July would have to include pre-installed software to block pornographic Websites.

The government said the policy was a response "to calls from many schools and parents," but some said it is an invasion of privacy.
