iPhone suicide victim's family compensated

FOXCONN Technology Group, a unit of Taiwan electronics giant Hon Hai, has reached a compensation deal with the family of an employee who committed suicide during an investigation into the loss of a prototype of an iPhone.

Foxconn Administrative General Manager Li Jinming said yesterday that Foxconn would make a one-off payment of 360,000 yuan (US$52,700) to the parents of Sun Danyong, who killed himself by jumping out of a window of his 12th floor apartment on July 16 in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province.

The company would also pay 30,000 yuan annually to support Sun's parents, Li said. Executives of the company would attend Sun's funeral in Yunnan Province.

A forensic examination by the Shenzhen police showed Sun died as a result of the fall and had no other injuries other than those caused by the fall.

Sun's death sparked controversy when a person claiming to be Sun's former classmate said in a widespread Internet article that Sun was held illegally in custody and his apartment raided during investigations into the loss of the prototype. The article also claimed Sun was beaten during the investigation.
