Kane ‘trick fires England into last 16

Harry Kane scored a hat trick to help England to its most one-sided World Cup victory, a 6-1 rout of Panama yesterday that secured a place in the last 16 with a game to spare.

John Stones headed in two goals and Jesse Lingard curled in another. England’s previous high for goals in a World Cup match was set in its 4-2 victory over Germany in 1966 final.

Two of Kane’s goals came from the penalty spot and the third via his heel.

“Fantastic,” Kane beamed in an interview after leaping to the top of the World Cup Golden Boot scoring chart with five goals in two games, one more than Cristiano Ronaldo and Romelu Lukaku.

“So proud of the boys. Just enjoying it being here. We knew it was going to be tough but it’s all coming together. It’s a brilliant result, fantastic to be through and to do it in this way is great.”

England goes into the Group G finale against Belgium level on points and with the same goal difference after conceding a late goal against Panama, which was eliminated after two matches in its World Cup debut.

The records tumbled for England on an easy afternoon in Nizhny Novgorod.

It was the first time in England’s history it has managed five goals in a first half and Kane became the first England player to score a World Cup hat-trick since Gary Lineker in 1986.

It is also the first time it has qualified for the knockout stage since 2010, and the biggest victory so far in Russia.

Despite the result, England started slowly and it was Panama who should have scored first in the fifth minute when Anibal Godoy blasted high and wide after the Central Americans carved open England’s defense.

However, the biggest cheer of the day was reserved for the 78th minute when defender Felipe Baloy scored Panama’s first ever finals goal.
