China beats Japan 3-1 to win back Thomas Cup
China beat Japan 3-1 in the final of the Thomas Cup in Bangkok yesterday, winning the men’s team crown for the first time since 2012.
After seeing Olympic champion Chen Long fall to Japan’s Kento Momota by 9-21, 18-21, China’s doubles act, Liu Cheng and Zhang Nan, tied the score by beating Takuto Inoue and Yuki Kaneko 21-10, 21-18. In the third rubber, youngster Shi Yuqi, playing in his maiden Thomas Cup, brushed aside Kenta Nishimoto 21-12, 21-17, leaving the stage for Li Junhui and Liu Yuchen to seal the tie in China’s favor as they held off Keigo Sonoda and Yuta Watanabe 17-21, 21-19,22-20. The triumph was China’s 10th in Thomas Cup. Japan had the consolation of claiming the women’s Uber Cup — its first in 37 years — by beating Thailand 3-0.
