Cardinals sack Matheny
St Louis fired manager Mike Matheny on Saturday after the slumping Cardinals fell 2-8 to the Cincinnati Reds to register a 10th loss in 15 games as their overall record dropped to 47-46. The Cardinals, who are 7 games behind the National League Central division-leading Chicago Cubs, also parted ways with hitting coach John Mabry and assistant hitting coach Bill Mueller. Bench coach Mike Shildt will serve as interim manager. Matheny, 47, was in his seventh season as manager of the Cardinals, whom he led to four straight postseasons from 2012, including the World Series in 2013, but the team has failed to make the playoffs since.
