2018 Pac-12 China Game rivals revealed
The University of California, Berkeley, and Yale University will meet in 2018 in the fourth edition of the Pac-12 China Game, tipping off the US’ 2018-19 men’s college basketball season.
The Federation of University Sports of China, which operates under the Ministry of Education, will continue to serve as the co-host for the game.
The announcement was made before the tipoff of the 2017 Pac-12 China Game — UCLA vs Georgia Tech — at Baoshan Gymnasium in Shanghai on Saturday, which UCLA won 63-60.
UCLA’s Kris Wilkes scored a team-high 18 points, while Jaylen Hands tallied 14 points. Georgia Tech’s Ben Lammers led all scorers with 24 points on 11-of-18 shooting with 10 rebounds.
UCLA held a 35-32 lead at halftime with Wilkes scoring 14 of his 18 points in the opening period. The freshman hit three of his four 3-pointers and helped the Bruins on a 7-0 run late in the half with a triple and a dunk.
The Pac-12 China Game is aimed at boosting the global popularity of Pac-12 athletic programs and universities, fostering cultural exchanges through sport, and creating unique educational experiences for Pac-12 student-athletes.
Two days before the 2017 Pac-12 China Game, the China-US University Sports and Education Summit was held at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The summit brought together university students, administrators, coaches, sports industry experts, business and political leadership from both countries.
Chinese Basketball Association president Yao Ming and actor Jet Li were among guests who showed up at the summit.
Yao has started a series of revolutions inside the CBA and its league after becoming its president. He compared the first year on his new job to his rookie year in the National Basketball Association.
“Sitting in office for 12 hours a day has been the biggest challenge for me,” Yao, a former Houston Rockets star, joked at the summit. “Like my rookie year in the NBA, I felt nervous, thrilling, but we are all up to the challenge.”
Yao said university basketball games are important for schools and the community to unite people and create a lively atmosphere.
