Former China captain sorry for his “irrational manners”

FORMER Chinese national team captain Fan Zhiyi apologized for‚ “irrational manners‚ “toward a referee, and was suspended from his job as the head coach of Shanghai Greenland Shenhua FC’s reserve team.

According to a referee report handed to the Chinese Football Association after a reserve team match between Shanghai SIPG and Shanghai Greenland Shenhua at Shanghai Stadium on Sunday, Fan walked toward an assistant referee after the match to argue about a controversial decision. Fan was said to have‚ slapped‚ the assistant referee and insulted him with words before other people interfered.

The controversial decision came in the closing minutes of the match which Shanghai SIPG reserve team won 2-0. Shenhua reserve team player Sun Xipeng broke into SIPG’s box but was tackled by a defender. The referee did not stop the match.

Sun could only be attended by medical staff when the ball went out of the bounds, during which Fan found the referee and argued about the tackle. The referee said he did not see the incident clearly and asked his assistant referee Jin Yifei. Jin said he did not see the tackle. Fan was annoyed by their answer, trying to argue with Jin again after the match and started to exchange words.

Greenland Shenhua FC issued a statement at 11pm on Sunday, saying Fan has been suspended from his position due to his‚ “irrational manners.”

Fan visited Shanghai Football Association on Monday morning to apologize to Jin. The two parties were said to have reached understanding.
