La Liga’s TV broadcasting goes high tech to wow fans

THE Spanish La Liga is introducing high technology into match broadcasting so as to enhance the television viewing experience for fans while ensuring that the league’s clubs have the most advanced tactical and strategic information.

La Liga officials brought the innovative match broadcasting showcase to Shanghai this week, during which visitors got a close view of technologies like Inter True View 360 replay & “Be The Player” viewing angle, Skycam bird’s-eye views and live 3D graphics. They also got a glimpse of what future fans could experience with VR technology.

“We have applied 4K HDR (High Dynamic Range) to two La Liga matches on each match day so as to bring fans and viewers closer to the action with more realistic images,” said Joris Evers, La Liga’s Chief Communications Officer.

“Creating a premium viewing experience is key as we know that most fans follow the league from afar.”

According to Ohad Gross, Business Development Director (Europe) of Intel Sports, La Liga is the only football league to have deployed Intel True View.

With 38 cameras fixed in one stadium, the high-tech system delivers an immersive 360-degree video experience enabling every piece of play to be reproduced in 3D, generating a volumetric image that allows for replays to be viewed from any position or angle.

Mediacoach, a high-tech innovative data analysis and visualization tool, has also been pressed into use. It records the performance of each player in every match and offers data to carry out in-depth analysis for coaching staff from all the 42 clubs in the first and second divisions of the Spanish league.

“All the data and analysis can be provided to a La Liga club for free two hours after each match,” said Manel Lozano, head of Mediacoach support team.

“All 42 clubs reached agreement to share the data with others, and this is perhaps the best kept secret to La Liga clubs’ success over the past decade.”
