Nothing slippery about Unagi Ryuu eatery

SPECIALIZING in grilled unagi (freshwater eel) as well as an array of delectable Japanese fare, the newly opened Unagi Ryuu is set to be the next big unagi eatery in the middle of Shanghai.

Just a mere mention of grilled unagi is attractive enough until you come to experience it on your own. An evening of unagi at Unagi Ryuu is the ultimate in satisfaction.

Striving to keep prices affordable and the quality of their food as true to traditional Japanese unagi cuisine, all of the eels, weighing less than 250g, are meticulously selected from Fujian Province (those eels are exported to the Japanese market) to ensure the quality best matches their house-made sauce and cooking skills.

It’s recommended to sit at the first-floor bar table if you come alone or with a plus one so you can watch the beautiful preparation procedure in front of you.

Before trying out other tasty eel dishes, be sure to order the signature Unagi Don (grilled eel rice set) for 180 yuan.

The excellent quality of their unagi is evident from the creamy and delicate flesh and, as such, the fish is given the respect it deserves, that is, a simple application of their smoky-sweet tare (sauce) and masterfully grilled over a charcoal grill.

Here, they stick to the Kanto style unagi preparation where the eel is sliced along the belly and grilled over a charcoal fire. It’s then steamed before put back on top of the charcoal grill with tare. The result ensures more tenderness without being too oily. The flesh virtually melts in your mouth.

The grilled eel is definitely the standout, enhanced with the rice adding a delightful texture.

Unagi Ryuu allows the diner to enjoy the eel in different ways, presenting a refreshing style of eating unagi as opposed to the regular eel-on-rice offered in most places in town. Some of the good-orders include fresh-grilled unagi served without tare or with tare; grilled unagi liver with tare, fried unagi bones, unagi egg rolls. The small eatery also offers other delicious snacks based on strong Japanese traditions and methods with plenty of tastes and characters.

You will be spoilt for choice at this cozy eatery.
