Tasty Little Creatures you’d eat and drink

LEADING Australian brewing company Little Creatures recently opened its Shanghai venue, in partnership with the Camel Hospitality Group.

Located next to The Hooked, another popular eatery under the Camel Group, Little Creatures discovered that Found 158 is a very progressive development with a mixture of expats and local Chinese looking for a fun night out with the “think different” mindset that the brewery has built its brand around.

Originally established in 2000 from Fremantle, Western Australia, Little Creatures Brewery was founded by Howard Cearns (a marketing specialist), Nic Trimboli (a restaurateur) and Phil Sexton (a master brewer), all of whom previously worked in the beer industry in Australia.

The company has grown to become one of the country’s largest craft beer brands, with venues open in Melbourne, Perth, Hong Kong and with Singapore, Beijing, London, San Francisco and Tokyo all opening this year.

Todd Pearson, managing director of the Camel Hospitality Group, said: “At Little Creatures we really try to have a true craft beer focus. We encourage our customers to try our beer paddle (6 x 100ml beer for 78 yuan) so that they can really get an opportunity to understand and sample the differences between the types of craft beer we have on offer, and to not just taste the differences, but also take away an education on why the different beers taste the way they do and how they are made.”

The Little Creatures Pale Ale is the star of the show. It’s an American Pale Ale (5.2 percent alc/vol), brewed with Cascade (aroma) and Chinook (bittering) whole hopflowers, self-propagated yeast with a secondary bottle fermentation, and Australian malts. On several occasions it has been awarded Australia’s best Ale.

Little Creatures was built from a love affair with interesting beers and they like to have their customers take some of what with them. However, an evening without food pairing is not complete. Sharing plates are designed to encourage communal dining amongst friends. The Crispy Chicken (95 yuan), Garlic Butter Prawns (125 yuan), Steamed Mussels (125 yuan), Truffle Mushroom Flatbread (105 yuan) are some of their favorite dishes.

Personally I also enjoyed Hand Cut Fries with truffle mayo (55 yuan) and Beef Ribs (185 yuan). The good thing about Little Creatures, there is nothing pretentious here.

Executive Chef Elaine Wang has been working in Western kitchens in Shanghai for over five years, who has recently spent a period time in Hong Kong with the Little Creatures team in Kennedy Town before taking on the role.

The beauty of the place is that it really is ideal for any night of the week whether it’s a laid-back night catching up with a mate, or a larger bunch get-together for a Friday night out. The casual, relaxed vibe lends itself well to catering for a guaranteed evening of comfort, good food and great beer.
