Photos Emerge of Shared Bikes Being Misused

Chen Xiaoli

With the rising popularity of shared bikes, more and more riders have been spotted misusing them.

Shared bikes, unlike traditional bikes, are designed without rear frames to prevent riders from carrying passengers.

However, photos taken by the West China Metropolis Daily show people in Chengdu, capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province, carrying passengers in multifarious ways such as children standing or sitting on the shell of the rear wheel.

Some companies have equipped their bikes with baskets to enable people to put their personal objects like bags, etc. Instead, riders were seen using the baskets to ferry their little kids.

Netizens criticized the behavior of riders and even pointed out that it could be dangerous.

"Shared bikes are designed for single person. Everyone should be responsible for their own safety," one of them commented.

Bike-sharing operators have also noticed that e-commerce sites like Taobao are now selling children's seats specifically intended for shared bikes. The vendors claim their products are "very safe" but customer reviews showed some riders complaining that they were "shaky."

Leading bike-sharing company Mobike has asked the e-commerce sites to remove the products from their shelves.

User agreements for Mobike, Ofo and bluegogo forbid riders from carrying extra passengers, and carry a warning that riders will be responsible in case of accidents.

Many cities, including Shanghai, have issued regulations, banning people from carrying passengers on shared bikes.
