Urinating Man Covered in Red Cloth After Public Outrage

Han Jing

District authorities have used red cloth to cover a controversial statue at the Shanghai International Fashion Center in the city’s Yangpu District of a man urinating , after it provoked a backlash.

They have ordered the developer to replace it, news portal reported the story on May 3.

Some residents thought what they said was a vulgar and awkward statue should be removed from a public area where parents took their children for walks. Others thought it was much ado about nothing.

Some art experts said the statue was realistic and challenged viewers’ aesthetics too much, saying statues in public spaces should be more sensitive to public taste.

The Shanghai Morning Post said duties of 60,000 yuan (US$8,700) were levied on the statue.

Authorities from the district’s bureau of land planning said the statue was placed by a developer without proper approval. They have already ordered them to replace it.
