GM to continue grow electric vehicle portfolio in China

General Motors will "continue to grow our electric vehicle portfolio in China" to meet the growing demand of consumers, its president of GM China said on Tuesday. 

The US automaker aims to launch 10 new-energy vehicle models in China between 2016 and 2020. From 2021 through 2023, GM will double the number of new-energy vehicles available in the domestic market.

“China is playing an essential role in driving toward a future of zero emissions,” said Matt Tsien, president of GM China. “We will continue to grow our electric vehicle portfolio in China with diverse solutions” and seek to integrate "GM’s global expertise in electrification with our local research, development and manufacturing capabilities to focus on delivering safe and reliable products that are tailored for our customers across China.”

The automaker has already launched the Cadillac CT6 Plug-In, Buick VELITE 5 extended-range electric vehicle and Baojun E100 electric vehicle in China. GM will introduce the VELITE 6 plug-in hybrid electric vehicle and VELITE 6 electric vehicle into the market in the near future.

GM is also localizing battery packs to support the new-energy vehicles at SAIC-GM’s battery assembly plant in Shanghai. 

The plant adopts the same strict global assembly processes and the same technical standards as GM’s battery assembly factory in the United States.

GM also has a battery lab at the GM China Advanced Technical Center in Shanghai that develops, validates and tests battery systems to ensure the quality of GM’s electrified vehicles in China.
