Visitors can ride in self-driving cars in Jiading District to experience the latest auto industry technology and innovation during the 2020 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC), which will open on Thursday in Shanghai.

From July 9 to 11, the Shanghai government will host an autonomous driving experience event at Shanghai International Automobile City in Jiading District, as one of the key events of this year's WAIC.

The self-driving cars use cameras, radar and a light detection and rangefinding system called LiDAR to navigate the vehicles which travel along two planned routes during the event. One of the routes is open roads for intelligent and connected vehicles and the other is semi-open roads in Shanghai Auto Expo Park.

This is the third consecutive year for Shanghai International Automobile City to host an autonomous driving experience event for the WAIC. Compared with 2018 and 2019, there are more types of vehicles this year, including robo-taxis, self-driving buses, minibuses, as well as unmanned retail and sweeping vehicles.

Organizers will limit the number of participants, and guests are required to make a reservation online in advance. Due to COVID-19, participants are required to provide a reservation text message, identification card and health code if they want to attend.
