China UnionPay, the country’s banking card association, saw both the number and amount of transactions on its mobile application hit new record highs during the Double 12 shopping festival, thanks to its strong discount campaigns across the country.

The company said that it attracted more than 1 million new users for its mobile application on the very day of December 12. The total number and amount of payments on the platform surged eight-fold and six-fold respectively year-on-year, both reaching new record highs.

To offer its customers more choices with favorable prices, China UnionPay joined hands with 16 commercial banks and 400,000 merchants, both online and offline, to offer promotions in first- and second-tier cities as well as county and rural areas.

China UnionPay said that the campaign will last for two weeks until December 23, and users all over the country can enjoy discounts of varying degrees while buying food and clothing, paying transportation fares and even booking air tickets.
