Japan's rail operator JR East has inked a strategic cooperation agreement with online travel operator Ctrip to promote rail tourism among Chinese tourists.

The two sides will conduct cooperation on ticketing under the agreement signed on Friday.

Electronic tickets of JR East pass will be sold on Ctrip, and tourists are able to receive rail tickets purchased on Ctrip at airports or get them via express delivery at hotels in Japan.

It was the first time that JR East has conducted cooperation over regional tourism promotion with a Chinese company.

Railway tourism is gaining popularity in China and is expected to account for one-fifth of the tourism market in China by 2025, Ctrip said.

The cooperation aims to make Japan's rail tourism more known among Chinese travelers, and provide convenience for ticket purchase for Chinese tourists ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, JR East said.
