EGO New Retail Co, a joint venture between local retail conglomerate Bailian Group and Alibaba, aims to accelerate its introduction of breakfast stores and food trucks.

A total of 40 smaller spin-off EGO breakfast stores and 20 food trucks will open by the end of this year, according to EGO, following the launch of five new stores and five food trucks on Tuesday.

The new food trucks in Hongkou, Pudong, Baoshan, Putuo and Yangpu districts can serve about 500 customers per hour.

A dozen delivery lockers are available at each truck operated by EGO. Shoppers can order for pick-up at both the food trucks and convenience stores.

EGO New Retail Co Chief Executive Officer Zhao Chenbin said it will add more new convenience stores with more high-tech functions and strengthen supply chains to ensure breakfast quality.

"We will improve transaction procedures and product types based on an initial trial operation stage to prepare for the launch of more food trucks in the coming months," he said.

Shanghai Commerce Commission Director Hua Yuan said that local retailers have rushed to provide new breakfast and retail solutions amid evolving consumer demand.

The commission will make further plans after a detailed assessment of existing outlets and encourage new business formats.
