China's stock markets surge

China’s stock markets closed higher today, led by shares of building material companies.

The Shanghai Composite Index added 1.82 percent to close at 2,699.95 points. The Shenzhen Component Index gained 1.67 percent to end at 8,133.22 points.

Total turnover on the two stock exchanges rose to 253.66 billion yuan (US$36.95 billion) from 206.78 billion yuan on Monday.

Shares of China Railway Construction Corporation Limited, China Communications Construction Company Limited and China Aluminum International Engineering Corporation Limited all hit the daily limit of 10 percent.

Cement companies also performed strongly. Gansu Qilianshan Cement Group jumped 9.66 percent to close at 7.49 yuan while Tibet Tianlu Company Limited hit the daily limit of 10 percent.
