Shanghai will ensure ample supplies of fresh food and there is no need to stockpile, Shanghai Commission of Commerce said on Tuesday.

Shanghai is able to offer ample fresh food, including vegetables and pork, to satisfy demand at the moment, it said.

However, due to more people choosing to cook at home and some restaurants closed for the holiday, which used to be a low season for fresh food, demand is surging and the commission is ordering wholesale markets to increase supplies.

“Starting from Monday, we have observed a noticeable day-on-day rise in purchases of pork and vegetables in Shanghai’s three major wholesale markets, but there are still reserves after trading,” the commission said in a statement.

“To ensure supply, we have contacted suppliers in provinces including Guangdong, Fujian, Hainan and Yunnan to expand supply,” the commission said.

It is expected supplies of vegetable will be kept at over 5,000 tons a day in two days’ time and the supply of other foods will also be guaranteed.

There is no need to stockpile fresh food, the commission stressed, and fresh food needs to be eaten “fresh.”
