Shanghai stocks ended lower on Tuesday following a disastrous session on Wall Street.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index shed 0.34 percent to close at 2,779.64 points.

Pharmaceutical, automobile and tourism shares were also among the biggest losers.

Market sentiment was weak as foreign markets fell further. Major US indices tumbled on concerns about the rapid spread of the coronavirus outside China.

The S&P 500, Nasdaq and the Dow were down more than 11 percent. On Wall Street, trading halted again overnight as shares dropped on virus fears.

Shanghai Industrial Development Co Ltd declined 5.87 percent to 6.42 yuan (US$0.92) and Guizhou Yibai Pharmaceutical Co Ltd lost 5.04 percent to 5.28 yuan.
