JD.com is embarking on a cashierless shopping trend by opening such shops around the country.

The company opened its JD “Joy Space” cashierless shop in Shanghai on Nanjing Road W at the weekend and this pop-up stores are also available in Beijing, Tianjin and Guangzhou as well as Jiangsu and Liaoning provinces. The shops will run for one week.

The JD cashierless store in Shanghai is working with L’Oreal to bring dozens of products from the French cosmetic giant, including makeup,  facial and hair care, to shoppers.

Shoppers can also use augmented reality to see the virtual effects of the beauty product make-up through tablets or smartphones.

The cashierless shopping showcases JD’s facial recognition technology where users upload their facial images through their JD.com smartphone application before entering the shop.

Shoppers pay for the products after linking their WeChat payment account and JD.com shopping account.

Transactions at cashierless shops, including vending machines, are set to jump to 65 billion yuan by 2020 from around 20 billion yuan in 2017, according to iResearch Inc.
