A city-level integrated circuit design industrial park opened Wednesday in the Pudong New Area, aiming to strengthen Shanghai’s industry chain and better serve the national strategy of developing the industry.

The Shanghai government and Tsinghua Unigroup signed a strategic partnership Wednesday, witnessed by Shanghai Party secretary Li Qiang and Unigroup’s Chairman Zhao Weiguo.

Shanghai plans to consolidate its highland position of the Chinese integrated circuit industry with rich talent, innovation resources and a complete industry chain. The IC and chip sector will become a “name card of Shanghai's manufacturing industry," Li said.

Also on Wednesday, firms including Unigroup, Shanghai Will Semiconductor, GigaDevice Semiconductor and Alibaba announced they will set up facilities in the new industrial park in Zhangjiang.

The new park, which occupies 3 square kilometers, is expected to gather first-class chip design firms, plus talent and research organizations.
